Hialeah to Double Street Cleaning and Maintenance Frequency

New agreement doubles street sweeping service while reducing the cost of each comparable citywide cycle by nearly 19 percent

HIALEAH, FL – September 30, 2026 – The City of Hialeah is launching an enhanced street sweeping program that will double the frequency of service across the city while lowering the cost of each comparable citywide sweeping cycle.

Under the new agreement, every curbed road in Hialeah will be swept twice per month, increasing the City from 12 complete sweeping cycles per year to 24. The program will service approximately 830 curb miles each month, equivalent to roughly 415 roadway miles, with two new street sweepers deployed as part of the expanded service.

The new contract follows a review of City vendor agreements ordered by Mayor Bryan Calvo after taking office in January. As part of that review, the City evaluated existing routes, eliminated unnecessary mileage and negotiated a more efficient service structure.

The cost of a comparable complete citywide sweeping cycle is approximately 19 percent lower under the new agreement than under the previous contract.

“When we review a City contract, the goal is not simply to spend less. The goal is to get better value for taxpayers and improve the service residents receive,” said Mayor Bryan Calvo. “We took the efficiencies we negotiated in this agreement and put them back into the streets, allowing us to double the frequency of service across Hialeah.”

Under the previous arrangement, street sweeping and debris disposal were billed separately. The new agreement consolidates those services and includes additional accountability measures, including GPS tracking, monthly reporting and documentation of completed work.

The City is making an additional investment to expand the program, meaning overall spending will increase as Hialeah purchases twice as much service. However, each complete citywide sweeping cycle will now cost less than a comparable cycle under the previous agreement.

The expanded street sweeping program is part of a broader effort to improve street maintenance throughout Hialeah. The City is also bringing additional street repair capabilities in-house with new equipment intended to reduce reliance on outside contractors and allow crews to address potholes and other repairs more quickly and efficiently.

“Residents should be able to see the result of better government when they drive through their neighborhoods,” Calvo said. “Cleaner streets, more frequent service and better accountability are exactly the kind of improvements we want taxpayers to see.”
