Mayor Bryan Calvo Announces Renewal of Hialeah Senior Property Tax Relief Program

More than 5,000 qualifying senior homeowners expected to benefit as City continues relief without raising taxes or cutting essential services

HIALEAH, FL – September 23, 2026 – Mayor Bryan Calvo announced the renewal of Hialeah’s Senior Homeowner Relief Program for Fiscal Year 2027, continuing an initiative designed to reduce the property-tax burden on qualifying senior homeowners living on fixed incomes.

The renewed program is expected to benefit 5,118 Hialeah residents, with approximately $1.4 million in relief anticipated for qualifying homeowners.

To qualify, residents must be 65 years of age or older, have a homestead exemption on their primary residence and have an adjusted gross household income below $38,686.

“We created this program because seniors who spent decades building Hialeah should not be forced out of their homes because everyday costs keep rising,” said Mayor Bryan Calvo. “We found the savings first, protected essential services and then used those savings to provide relief.”

The program will now be incorporated into the City’s regular annual budget process, allowing Hialeah to revisit and fund the initiative each year rather than treating it as a one-time measure.

The administration developed the program without implementing a new tax or reducing police, fire rescue or other essential City services. Instead, the relief was funded through savings and efficiencies identified within City government.

“For a senior living on a fixed income, a few hundred dollars is not symbolic,” Calvo said. “It can help cover a utility bill, groceries, medication or a car repair. That is why this program matters.”

The renewal comes as property-tax relief remains a major issue across Florida. Calvo said Hialeah’s experience demonstrates that meaningful relief can be delivered while maintaining fiscal discipline and protecting essential services.

“Florida homeowners deserve real property-tax relief, but how that relief is implemented matters,” Calvo said. “Hialeah will continue doing what we have already shown works: finding savings first, controlling costs and making sure residents see the benefit.”
